Inniskeen & Kavanagh Country
INNISKEEN (Irish : INISCAOIN , meaning peaceful Island) is a village in County Monaghan located between the Towns of Carrickmacross and Dundalk , County Louth .

The Coordinates : 54 o 00`00N 6 o 35`35 W

A monastery was founded here in the 6th century by Saint Daigh. The monastery was burned twice and plundered by the Vikings . The Round Tower is still the remain of this period .The arrival of the Normans saw the construction of a motte which can still seen today .

The nearby former church which is now called Patrick Kavanagh Centre is the main place where the visitors can explore the history of this Region and the work of the well known Irish Poet who was born here in Inniskeen. Patrick Kavanagh’s (1904 – 1967) Poems are well documented and many events here in Inniskeen at the Patrick Kavanagh Centre bring many Visitors from Ireland and many other Countries. His most known Poem is also A well known Song called : RAGLAN ROAD in September.

The LOCAL GAA Club – INNISKEEN GRATTANS was founded in 1883 and are very important for sporting Life . The impressive New Stadium were opened in 2008.

One of BEST Pitch & Putt GOLF courses are on a beautiful location beside the FANE RIVER

Other Activities taken place at the Community Centre and the Centre beside the ROUND TOWER.


There are many beautiful Walks here in this Drum Lin Landscape of County Monaghan or the Mountains beside the Irish Sea . Slieve Guillion and the Mourne Mountains in South Down.

The nearest Walk is the Patrick Kavanagh Trail through the village of INNISKEEN / Time 1 to 5 Hours

The Monaghan Way is 64 km long and the finest Part is between Lough Muckno(Castleblaney to Inniskeen, Distance 23 km Most of the walk is beside the River Fane. Finish at the Patrick Kavanagh Centre. Click here to download the official Monaghan Way Guide

Slieve Gullion : A place of Magic and legend

The walk at Slieve Gullion would be between 4 – to 6 hours

Mourne Mountains : The distance from Gleneven Guest House to the Mourne Mountains is around 35 to 45 minutes with the car. The outstanding beauty of this Mountain Range attract many Tourist from around the world and there are 12 summits each higher than 600 meter’s with highestSummit 852 meter high . There are all different Levels available for the Tourist to Expert Mountain Climber.

The North East Region of Ireland is a Heaven for Anglers who want to enjoy Game and Course Fishing . The rivers are excellent for Trout – Sea Trout and Salmon Fishing during the Season which starts on 1 March until 12. Oct .

The river FANE is a beautiful medium sized river where You can enjoy the Trout Fishing . It has hatches of large dark olives , iron blue duns and various sedges . The FANE and his Tributories holding good Stocks of wild brown Trout , and from midsummer onwards there is also Sea Trout in the Fane

The angling for Salmon starts from the month of July until the 12 th . of October. The months of September and October are the ideal Salmon Months .

There are other Rivers (Blackwater –Kells and others) where Gleneven Guest House would Organising Angling Trips to. For Angling at these Rivers there would be Permits needed .

Fishing in the North East of Ireland

Lakes around Gleneven House



A fantastic lake in the early part ( Late March to June) of the year for Tench. Regular size is from 4lbs to 6lbs. A variety of methods can be used including fishing from a boat. Pike are very plentiful in this beautiful lake. Very easy access to the lake makes it very suitable for disabled anglers.


Derry Lake is 1 hectares, up to 4.5 m deep and has a good stock of big bream and tench. Roach rudd perch and pike are also on hands. Anchored fishing spots were created and parking spaces are available
